Cahuita National Park was established on 1970 to protect a large coral reef off the Caribbean Coast. This Park protects about 2635 Acres with approximately one-tenth of the area marine (4.1 sq miles) 3 times the size of Central Park NYC) of beach, mangrove, margin/edge, marine and tropical rainforest-lowland habitats.

The Southern Caribbean has quite different weather patterns than most of Costa Rica and while the Pacific is inundated with rain in September and October the skies are clear and so is the white crystal water in Cahuita. Cahuita has coffee shops, pharmacies, schools, banks, grocery stores and a lot of restaurants. It is not as busy as Puerto Viejo. If you decide to go to more restaurants and to visit the Puerto Viejo, Cocles, Playa Chiquita and Manzanillo Gandoca Reserve, it is only going to take you about 20 minutes to get to there.

If you land in San Jose you can easily take a 20 minute domestic plane to Limon and from there is about 35 minutes drive to Cahuita.
